Residents’ Council is an independent, self-determining group made up of only residents of a Long Term Care Home. The council is intended and designed to form the collective voice of all residents who reside in the long term care home, whether or not they attend meetings. All residents have the right to participate in the Residents’ Council.

The Resident’s Council meets regularly to provide advice and recommendations to the licensee regarding what the residents would like to see done to improve care or the quality of life in the home, and to provide peer to peer support.

Residents’ Councils also meet to exercise several powers including, but not limited to sponsoring and planning activities, collaborating with community groups, reviewing the financial documents and operations of the Long Term Care Home, and attempting to resolve disputes.

Braemar Residents’ Council meets the first Friday of every month at 10:30am, unless stated otherwise.

Family Councils are groups whose members share a common concern about the quality of lives of their relatives or friends and provide mutual support, empowerment and advocacy to the family and friends of the Long Term Care Home.

They are organized, self-led, self-determining, democratic groups composed of family and friends of the residents of Long Term Care Homes.

Family Councils provide assistance, information and advice to the families and friends of residents. They provide information and advice about the rights and obligations under LTCHA and of the Home. Family Councils can help resolve disputes between the Home and residents in a positive way and advise the Home of any concerns or recommendations.

Braemar currently does not have a formal Family Council. We hold open family meetings annually to encourage and educate families on the creation of Family Council and update families on changes to Braemar.

We have had two family members step up and volunteer for the Chair and Secretary position but are currently looking for a volunteer for the Vice Chair position. If you are interested, please reach out to the Designated Staff Assistant.
