RESIDENTS’ COUNCIL 

What is Residents’ Council?

As per the Ontario Association of Residents’ Council:

A Residents’ Council is an independent, self-determining group made up of only residents of a long-term care home. The Council is intended and designed to form the collective voice of all residents who reside in the LTC home, whether or not they attend meetings. All residents have the right to participate in the Residents’ Council.

The Residents’ Council, meets regularly to provide advice and recommendations to the licensee regarding what the residents would like to see done to improve care or the quality of life in the home, and to provide peer to peer support.

Residents’ Councils also meet to exercise several powers including, but not limited to sponsoring and planning activities, collaborating with community groups, reviewing the financial documents and operations of the LTC home, and attempting to resolve disputes.

Through the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021, every licensee of a long-term care home must ensure that a Residents’ Council is established at the home. Every licensee of a long-term care home must also appoint a Residents’ Council Assistant who is acceptable to that council to assist the Residents’ Council and act as a liaison with the home.

Braemar Residents’ Council meets the first Friday of every month at 10:45 am, unless stated otherwise. Attendance is restricted to members/residents only. Non-member attendance, such as a guest speaker, must be approved by the Council.

FAMILY COUNCIL

What is Family Council?

The Braemar Family Council formed in July 2023 to provide a forum for engaging family members of Braemar residents, to collaborate in a meaningful way, and ensure that residents and family are the focus of care delivery and ongoing strategic planning at Braemar.

Purpose/Goals:

The Council goals are to support, educate, problem-solve, and communicate. This forum is an important avenue to obtain resident/family input on recommendations for consideration, hear concerns for ongoing quality improvement, and engage feedback on new initiatives or changes to services.

The Council plans to utilize Braemar’s core values to CREATE purpose:

• Compassion
• Respect
• Empathy
• Acceptance
• Teamwork
• Empowerment

Meeting Commitments:

Meetings are conducted at minimum quarterly (every 3 months) in person or via virtual methods. A typical meeting length is one (1) hour.

The Braemar Family Council is actively recruiting new members!
